Walnut Street Transect

In our first transect, this project was for a richer understanding of a specific urban area. In groups of three we were assigned a different transect. In this group Walnut Street was dissected utilizing multi-modes of empirical research and investigation to map the operational conditions of the site area with the intention of revealing operational opportunities. Throughout this project we discovered the multiple layers of information that maps contain, from sewer lines to air traffic control, our group of three specifically focused on the financial impact starting from Broad Street ending at 38th Street past the Walnut Street Bridge.

As you begin your walk on Walnut Street, you are immediately hit with the sense of fast paced quality of life and of businesses as a whole. Walnut is a tempting ground because of its high and low end shops along the eastern end of the street accompanied by the hotels and restaurants around Rittenhouse Square. This seven acre park is well known for its soothing enjoyment and its ability to effectively block the chaos from Walnut Street, seen by the transition from fast activity to slow. On the western side of the Schuylkill River is the University of Pennsylvania, which provides an average $9.5 billion to the city of Philadelphia. The libraries, lab buildings, and book stores highly thrive on this side of the transect because of its fast paced student life. The overall economy of Walnut is integral to the city from each economic factor that combines Walnut Street as a whole.
